Sri Lanka's melamine tableware manufacturer, since 1993
Five Star Melamine has been making melamine tableware in Sri Lanka for over three decades. We remain the only manufacturer of melamine tableware in the country. Everything sold under our name is moulded, finished and quality-checked at our own factory in Colombo.
That distinction matters more than it sounds. Almost all melamine tableware sold in Sri Lanka is imported, and a good share of it is not what it claims to be. Melamine is expensive, so it is common for cost to be taken out by blending in cheaper fillers. The result looks like melamine and is sold as melamine, but it is not food-grade, and there is no practical way for a buyer to tell by looking at it.
We make ours from 100% food-grade melamine, certified to both EU and Sri Lankan standards. That is the whole basis of the business.
What we make
A full tableware range built for daily use: dinner plates, side plates, bowls, serving dishes, platters, mugs, tumblers, trays, cutlery and children's ranges. Designs run from plain white service ware for hotels and restaurants to patterned and coloured ranges for households.
Melamine sits in a useful gap between the alternatives. It does not shatter like ceramic or glass, it does not stain or scratch the way lower-grade plastics do, it holds colour and print through years of washing, and it is considerably lighter to carry and stack. For any operation that has costed out annual breakage, the arithmetic is usually straightforward.
Who we supply
Retail. Our products are stocked at Keells across its 140+ outlets, Arpico, Spar, Glomark, and department stores including Abans, Cool Planet and Lady J.
Hotels, restaurants and cafés. We supply Cinnamon Life, Cinnamon Bey and Cinnamon Bentota Beach, along with Shangri-La, Taj and Galadari. In the restaurant and bakery trade we are the tableware supplier for every Perera & Sons, Green Cabin, Caravan Fresh and Little Lion outlet, among many others.
Direct and online. Households can order the full range through our website, with delivery islandwide.
Custom manufacturing. We produce to order in volume, including custom colours, shapes and logo printing for hotel groups, restaurant chains, corporates and promotional programmes.
Why local manufacturing matters here
Two reasons, both practical.
The first is supply. Importers are exposed to freight timelines, currency movement and the duty structure, all of which have moved against melamine imports in recent years. We manufacture here, hold stock here, and can turn around a repeat order or a custom run without waiting on a shipment.
The second is accountability. When something is made in your own factory, there is nobody else to point to. We control the raw material we buy, the moulding, the finishing and the testing. If a plate is not right, it does not leave the building.
How we work
Our factory in Colombo runs compression and injection moulding lines with a team of around twenty people. We have spent the last few years investing in the plant and, just as importantly, in the systems around it: incoming material checks, in-line quality control, batch traceability, and the process discipline that lets us hold consistency as volumes grow.
That work is ongoing. Demand from retail and hospitality has grown faster than we projected, and our priority is scaling capacity without giving up the standard the business was built on.
